When I was a kid and hosting on other companies, I had a dream to own a server. Later it became to owning a co-located rack and finally my passion has brought me a new target. Owning a data center. However, I had to work around the clock to make something to happen.

Starting your own web hosting company may seem like an easy task. But remember, to become a stable company in future. You should study beforehand starting your own web hosting company.

If you’re planning to buy bunch of E5’s without proper knowledge and no preparation, please stop and save your $$. Because owning a web hosting company is not a thing to play with. If you’re trying to play with customers data. You will surely end up being sued by customers.

Sued by cops

Lets breakdown points that you should concern before starting a web hosting business.

  • Knowledge on market – Without having proper knowledge about the current trends and marketing strategies, opening a web hosting business is nothing more than opening an ice cube selling shop for Eskimos. I’m not saying it’s pointless, but you need to have the ability to sell a refrigerator to a Eskimo.

  • Knowledge in web hosting technologies – Lets be fair. If you don’t know what a server is, how to configure at least a vHost. You’re going to end up paying $$$$$$$ to your data center. Also you would have to hire people to solve customer issues & it will cost you more $$’s. At least try to grab some learning material (even we have published few on our web site) read them. It will help you to become successful with your startup.

  • Capital to start – You’re going to run a computer 24×7. Consider the cost and review about your capital. If you cannot afford to run at least a year without higher profit. You really need to grab some money from your wallet. Remember, quality != higher price. So do a research first and find the best provider that can tailor you a matching package.

Now you have some basic idea about the industry and it’s competitiveness.  Next post I’m going to discuss how to select a server and what are the billing systems that you can use. So stay tuned !
